Timor-Leste – Chair Addresses United Nations General Debate, 76th Session

New York, 28 September 2021 (TDI): The chair of the delegation of Timor-Leste, Karlito Nunes delivered a speech at the bench of the United Nations General Assembly at the 76th session on 27 September 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global challenge that not just affects the health sector but has created a devastating impact on the socio-economic sector, Karlito said.

Since the beginning of the pandemic Tomir-Teste has recorded more than 19 thousand cases with more than 18 thousand has fully recovered and 113 deaths have been registered. As the COVID-19 pandemic puts high pressure on their already weak health system and due to the lack of facilities and resources Timor-Leste Democratic Republic is unable to cope with challenges, He said in his speech.

He also highlighted that under the context of Climate Change, the Timor-Leste government has been committed to reforestation and correction of watercourse beds. It is also worth mentioning the government’s action to combat plastic waste and the reforestation action ensures greater rainfall and a cleaner environment. The president of the Republic of Timor-Leste launched the national campaign  “a citizen a tree” which had special support from youth organizations.
