Chinese Foreign Minister speaks to UN Secretary-General

Beijing/ New York, 28 September 2021 (TDI): The State Councilor and Foreign Minister of China, Wang Yi, virtually met with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on 27 September 2021. On behalf of China, the foreign minister reiterated that China is responsibly following the UN Charter.

Wang Yi mentioned the 50th anniversary of China’s restoration of the lawful seat in the UN and told the UN Secretary-General that China is a proponent of the UN’s international mission. He also assured China’s further contribution to defend and develop the UN’s cause, role, and charter.

While resisting the actions that encourage conflict, Wang said that China will keep on adding to the harmony and improvement of humanity. Additionally, he asked for bringing new developments in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) because of the global outbreak of COVID-19.

Antonio Guterres thanked China for advocating UN’s charter, in issues related to maintenance of peace and stability, and contributing to the UN’s mission notably anti-COVID. During the conversation, he congratulated China on completing five decades of its seat in the UN.

The UN Secretary-General also stressed the willingness of the UN to foster collaboration between the UN and China in various areas such as biodiversity, climate, human rights, development, and peace and security.
