Mexico City, 25 November 2022 (TDI): The 27th Extraordinary Session of the General Conference of OPANAL took place on 17 November in Mexico.

The Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) is an intergovernmental organization.

For the extraordinary session, more than 80 delegates from the member states participated in the conference.

This also includes delegates from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (ABACC); the Organization of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (OTPCEN); and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Apart from the international organizations, the civil society organization; International Campaign to Abolish nuclear weapons (ICAN), also took part in the conference. During the extraordinary session, 15 resolutions were adopted.

This included important areas with respect to the military-denuclearized nature of Latin America and the Caribbean region. Different presentations were delivered by delegations from various states.

The delegation of Mexico presented a report to the member states of OPANAL over the possible results and objectives that are expected at the meeting that will take place in New York in 2023.

General Conference of OPANAL

General Conference is the supreme decision-making body of the organization. It holds regular sessions every two years and can hold special sessions.

It is made of contracting parties to the Treaty of Tlatelolco. This includes the 33 member states of Latin America and the Caribbean region.

The XXVII (27th) extraordinary session conducted by the general conference this year, concluded the session by adopting a resolution.

The General Conference adopted Resolution CG/E/Res.15/2022 “Vote of Thanks” in which it thanked: “the Government of the United Mexican States for its generous support to the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in the Latin America and the Caribbean – OPANAL – to carry out the XXVII Extraordinary Session of the General Conference, providing the necessary technical requirements for its realization.”
