Beijing, 4 November 2021 (TDI): Chinese President, Xi Jinping conferred the top science award to two scientists. The recipients of the award are the aircraft designer, Gu Songfen and the leading nuclear scientist, Wang Dazhong. The awards were bequeathed in acknowledgment of exceptional contributions to scientific and technological innovation.

The State Preeminent Science and Technology Award was presented by Xi Jinping during an impressive ceremony at the Great Hall of the People, in Beijing. Earlier Xi Jinping also awarded healthcare frontline personnel in the fight against Covid-19.

Wang Dazhong is a renowned nuclear energy scientist. He was awarded for 60 years of devoted work for the development of nuclear energy. Moreover, he also helped to advance China’s economic, scientific, and national defense strengths.

Gu Songfen

Gu Songfen, a distinguished aircraft designer and holds membership of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He pioneered the aerodynamic design of aircraft. Consequently, China was able to produce the Nanchang CJ-6, the Shenyang J-8. His efforts greatly improved China’s air defense capabilities.

Subsequently, the two scientists presented certificates to the recipients of State awards in technological invention, natural science, technology cooperation, scientific and technological progress, and international science.

Apart from the scientists, the awardees included epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan and his team. Zhong Nanshan and his team were commended for undertaking difficult respiratory ailments like acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), lung cancer COVID-19, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The Chinese Premier, Li Keqiang also addressed at the ceremony. He underscored the significance of innovation in science and technology.  He declared that the two played an integral role in the nation’s pandemic response and economic recovery.
