Who is Representing Pakistan at COP 30 and What to Expect

Belém (TDI): Pakistan’s Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz, will represent the country at COP 30, which is taking place in Belem, Brazil, highlighting the nation’s proactive approach to climate resilience and adaptation.

Her participation marks a key moment for Pakistan, a country ranked among the most climate-vulnerable globally, as it seeks to showcase its climate strategies on an international stage.

Punjab’s participation follows the province’s deployment of early-warning systems and digital relief operations during recent floods along the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers, protecting millions of people and livestock while showcasing practical steps to enhance climate resilience.

The province’s response, rescuing millions of people and livestock, implementing transparent digital relief systems, and investing in early warning and disaster mitigation technologies, reflects a model of resilience rooted in science and data-driven policy.

Maryam Nawaz will detail Punjab’s flood management strategies and water conservation projects. She will also showcase the Suthra Punjab waste-management program, the rollout of e-mobility in 42 cities, and new renewable energy initiatives, emphasizing measurable impacts on carbon reduction.

These initiatives aim to reduce carbon emissions while showcasing how provincial-level action can complement Pakistan’s national climate commitments.

At COP 30, she will seek funding and technical support for flood defenses and renewable-energy projects, aiming to reduce vulnerability in Pakistan’s most flood-prone districts.

Officials accompanying the CM will participate in high-level dialogues with global leaders, climate experts, and multilateral organizations.

Punjab’s Senior Minister for Environment, Marriyum Aurangzeb, will join the chief minister during the visit, contributing to discussions on climate-resilient infrastructure, green technologies, and partnerships to enhance Pakistan’s capacity to respond to extreme weather events.

Punjab’s presence at COP 30 highlights provincial leadership in climate initiatives, such as digitized disaster response systems and city-wide electric transport projects, showing measurable contributions to national adaptation goals.

The showcase of Punjab’s initiatives offers insights for other provinces and countries facing similar climate challenges, emphasizing actionable solutions rather than policy rhetoric.

The event will also provide opportunities to highlight Pakistan’s ongoing climate diplomacy, including commitments under the Paris Agreement and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Engagement at COP 30 allows Pakistan to strengthen its global position, attract technical cooperation, and mobilize climate finance to support adaptation and mitigation programs across vulnerable regions.

By participating, Punjab aims to position itself as a regional leader in climate adaptation, with Maryam Nawaz emphasizing that evidence-based, technologically advanced, and socially inclusive approaches are critical for safeguarding Pakistan’s people, economy, and ecosystems.
