US, Turkiye hold Strategic Mechanism Dialogue

Washington DC, 16 September 2022 (TDI): The United States and Turkiye convened their third meeting of the US-Turkey Strategic Mechanism Dialogue in Washington on Thursday.

The meeting was chaired by US Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkiye, Sedat Onal. The US Undersecretary of State, Victoria Nuland for Political Affairs also participated in the Dialogue.

Agenda for Strategic Mechanism Dialogue

The United States and Turkiye reaffirmed their strong cooperation as partners and NATO Allies and participated in a profound dialogue on major global and regional problems and areas of bilateral cooperation.

They examined the vast security, economic, cultural, and interpersonal linkages that sustain the United States and Turkiye’s bilateral relationship.

The United States and Turkiye reiterated their commitment to promote peace and stability and to further deepen and strengthen their historic defense alliance.

They lauded the recent expansion of their bilateral trade relations and reaffirmed their commitment to deepen their economic cooperation in every possible area.

They also emphasized that the United States and Turkiye support global public health and food and energy security jointly. In addition, the delegates reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing energy supply, access, efficiency, and independence.

Both parties addressed political changes in the region and emphasized the significance of bolstering transatlantic ties. They emphasized the necessity to combat all forms and expressions of terrorism.

The delegates reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and addressed strategies for enhancing NATO coordination.

The United States applauded Turkiye’s efforts to forge the Istanbul Black Sea grain agreement to ensure the safe transit of Ukrainian agricultural products through the Black Sea.

Both states reviewed potential channels of cooperation in other regions of the world, including the Middle East and Africa, and emphasized the significance of achieving peace in the South Caucasus.

Both parties welcomed the continuation of robust, open conversations on the issues and other matters and decided to continue exchanging visits between senior officials in the future.

During the next edition of the Dialogue, the United States and Turkiye look forward to reviewing progress and finding new areas of cooperation.
