US State Secretary spoke with Malaysian Foreign Minister

Washington, 1 October 2021 (TDI): The US secretary of State Antony J. Blinken held a telephonic conversation with Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah on Thursday. The officials reiterated the strong partnership between the two countries and committed to addressing the problems in Burma.

During the conversation, Secretary Blinken and Foreign Minister Saifuddin discussed the enduring US-Malaysian relationship, besides emphasizing the importance of promoting stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Regarding Burma, the leaders shared mutual concerns and stressed upholding the international rules-based order to deal with the situation. They also exhibited a determination to enhance the bilateral relations between Malaysia and the US in multiple areas, particularly the health and security dimension.

The United States formally established diplomatic relations with Malaysia in 1957, following its independence from the United Kingdom. In 2014, both states elevated their relationship to a comprehensive partnership. At present, Malaysia and the United States share an extensive partnership with regard to trade, investment, educational, cultural, and environmental cooperation. The two countries also collaborate on various security matters, including maritime domain awareness, regional stability, counterterrorism, besides frequently participating in bilateral and multilateral exercises.
