Lima, 25 November 2021 (TDI): Peru’s Foreign Minister, Oscar Maúrtua, virtually participated in the meeting entitled “Transformations for a Zero Hunger Latin America” yesterday.
During the session, he exhibited Peru’s support towards the formation of a regional platform that ensures nutrition and the eradication of hunger simultaneously. In this regard, the Foreign Minister showcased an interest to form the “Great Alliance for Nutrition and Zero Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
The initiative is proposed by Colombia and the Office of the World Food Program (WFP). It seeks to adopt joint actions at the regional and multilateral level to eliminate hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly during Covid-19, which has negatively impacted food security conditions in the vulnerable states.

Considering this, Peru’s Foreign Minister reiterated the state’s commitment to prioritizing access to basic services and the improvement of the living conditions of all citizens, without any distinction.
He noted that the Government of Peru places the highest priority on health, education, and food security for all, with particular emphasis on vulnerable populations and children.
Moreover, he urged maintaining a decentralized and inclusive approach on the matter and called for innovative nutritional methods to bring the regional states closer to the goal of ending malnutrition.
Foreign Minister Maúrtua further maintained that Peru’s support for the nutrition project coincides with its national interest in bringing innovative solutions to achieve food-system sustainability. It also aligns with the United Nations 2030 Agenda and its goal of achieving ‘Zero Hunger.’
Lastly, Oscar Maúrtua announced that Peru’s efforts towards the nutrition project are also being endorsed by Chile, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, and El Salvador.
