US Should Win Back Tehran’s Trust for Nuclear Talks: Araghchi

Tehran (TDI):  Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Tuesday that the new United States administration under President Donald Trump will have to win back Tehran’s confidence to renegotiate the nuclear deal.

He made these remarks in an interview with Sky News.

“This is an entirely different situation – much more complicated than the previous one,” he said, in a video clip posted on the news channel’s official Telegram channel.

He said the Trump administration would have to do a lot more things to bring Tehran back on the table.

During his first term, Trump adopted a “maximum pressure” policy to deal with Iran in his first term. He withdrew from a landmark 2015 deal that provided some sanctions relief to Iran in return for some curbs on its nuclear programme

In return, Iran increased its level of uranium enrichment.

Araghchi underscored the need for confidence-building measures between the two sides.

“We haven’t heard anything but the nice words (from the new US administration) and this is obviously not enough.”

The Iranian foreign minister’s statement comes days after Trump said he would want to strike a deal with Tehran instead of military strikes.

Araghchi responded strongly to his comment, saying: “Any attack against our nuclear facilities would be faced with an immediate and decisive response.”

He stressed that such a move would turn the Middle East into a very bad disaster.
