Uruguayan President meets Chinese top legislator

Beijing, 23 November 2023 (TDI): On Thursday, Uruguayan President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou met with Zhao Leji, China’s top legislator, in Beijing to discuss how to strengthen the ties between the two countries’ legislative bodies.

Zhao, who is the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), praised the development of China-Uruguay relations over the past 35 years.

He said that the two countries have set an example of peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation despite their different political systems and economic sizes.

He also welcomed the announcement made by the two heads of state on Wednesday to upgrade the bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

He said that this is a significant milestone and that the two sides should follow the strategic guidance of the two leaders, respect, trust and support each other, and jointly build the Belt and Road with high quality to benefit the two peoples.

Zhao noted that next year will mark the 65th anniversary of legislative exchanges between the two countries.

He said that the NPC of China is ready to continue the traditional friendship and deepen exchanges with the Uruguayan General Assembly, and provide a solid legal guarantee for bilateral practical cooperation.

Lacalle expressed his willingness to actively implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state and the outcomes of his visit.

He also agreed to enhance the exchanges between the two legislatures and consolidate public support for bilateral friendship.
