Islamabad, 22 December 2021 (TDI): On Sunday the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) held a summit in Pakistan to discuss the situation in Afghanistan. The Summit involved the participation of all the 57 member states.
Apart from the member states, official representatives from France, the United States of America (USA), Russia, China, Britain, and the European Union (EU) were also invited. The conference was hosted by Pakistan. Amir Khan Muttaqi the Afghanistan’s Taliban Appointed Foreign Minister also attended the conference. The conference was also attended by the United States of America’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West.

The objective of the OIC Summit 2021
The goal of the conference was to prevent a humanitarian crisis and economic collapse in Afghanistan. All the members have joined the conference to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan. The conference highlighted the dire need of bringing International attention to the current situation in Afghanistan.
According to the United Nations (UN), more than half of Afghanistan’s population is facing a shortage of food, and poverty due to severe droughts and years of continuous war in Afghanistan. Moreover, the International Sanctions being imposed on the Taliban from the International community is further increasing the possibility of economic collapse in Afghanistan.
Thomas called the session to be productive and expressed hope of getting good favorable outcomes for Afghanistan. The US Special Representative for Afghanistan agreed on the need to create a Trust fund for humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.
The conference also agreed on forming an OIC special envoy for Afghanistan. The countries in the session agreed on supporting Afghanistan financially to avert the economic collapse from happening.
Since the Taliban came into power this OIC Summit is being regarded as the largest international gathering of this year. Thomas expressed the USA’s complete support for the contribution and role of OIC in regards to Afghanistan.
