United States, Colombia strengthen diplomatic relations

Bogota, 4 October 2022 (TDI): The United States and Colombia aim to strengthen their diplomatic relations through cooperating on bilateral agendas of mutual concern, to maintain strong ties that unite them.

In this regard, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken met with the President of Colombia Gustavo Petro, Vice president Francia Marquez, and Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva Duran.

The meeting took place in Bogota within the framework of 200 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Colombia.

The meeting aimed to discuss matters of mutual concern by both Colombia and the United States, including the priority areas related to peace, democracy, and respect for human rights.

Along with this, climate change and its drastic effects impacting biodiversity were also discussed. Both the states agreed that this climate issue calls for cooperation on the climate front through initiating regional and global mechanisms, to counter the climate crisis.

During the meeting, the Secretary of States, Antony Blinken also highlighted Colombia’s role in the implementation of peace as a commitment to the 2016 Peace Agreement.

US-Colombia Relations

Colombia gained independence from Spain in 1822, and since then the United States has established diplomatic relations. Both countries share a mutual commitment to promoting peace, security, and democratic governance across the region.

Colombia is one of the oldest democracies in Lattin America, and with the support of the United States, it has transformed its structure into a growing economy. The relationship between the United States and Colombia has evolved into a security and economic partnership.

United States has supported Colombia in implementing peace since 2016 after Colombia signed a peace accord with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). This accord ended a long-lasting conflict and stabilized the country’s security and peace.

Both, the United States and Colombia, enjoy robust cooperation on a variety of matters that strengthen their diplomatic relations.
