UNHCR Exalted US for Assisting Afghan Refugees

Islamabad, 27 November 2021 (TDI): The delegates of the United States Embassy in Islamabad chaired a core group meeting on Afghan refugees. Several members of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) attended the meeting on Tuesday.

The delegation of UNHCR Pakistan strongly commended Washington’s efforts to support the Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan. The core group session was arranged to discuss UNHCR’s ‘livelihoods initiative’ aimed at the well-being of Afghan refugees.

The initiative is an extension of the Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR) Support Platform. UNHCR adopted the strategy to provide vocational training to Afghan refugees and help them create a sustainable livelihood for themselves.

Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR)

SSAR is a platform initiated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to provide assistance to Afghan refugees. The platform was also endorsed by the governments of Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan.

The strategy covers various important areas such as consensus building and encouraging peaceful negotiations on the matter. It also makes efforts for the collaboration of international players to assist the refugee population from Kabul.

The SSAR platform has received enormous appreciation from the international community as well. Its major objective is to enable the Afghan refugees to create a sustainable livelihood in the host states; so when they return to their homeland, they are skilled enough to find an ample source of income.

Following the Taliban takeover of Kabul in mid-August, Afghanistan finds itself in the middle of a political and humanitarian crisis. Since Washington has committed to supporting the vulnerable population of Kabul on all fronts, it keeps assisting Afghan refugees residing in the US or other parts of the world.
