UN Chief Urges Global Push for Palestinian State

New York (TDI): UN Secretary-General António Guterres has emphasized the moral and political responsibility of the international community to push forward a two-state solution as the only viable path to resolving the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine.

In an interview with Arab News on Thursday, Guterres urged world powers to act decisively to revive and support efforts that would ensure peace and justice for both peoples.

“With everything we’re witnessing in Gaza and the West Bank, it’s critical to keep the two-state vision alive,” he said. “And for anyone questioning this approach, I ask what’s the alternative? A single-state scenario where Palestinians are either displaced or denied basic rights? That is not something the world can accept.”

Guterres’ remarks come in the lead-up to a major global summit on the Middle East peace process, set for later this month.

The conference, to be jointly chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, will focus on taking concrete action toward realizing a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Calls are now directed toward peace as humanitarian suffering deepens within much of Gaza, where Israeli military operations have continued since the collapse of a ceasefire in earlier March with Hamas. Reports from different aid organizations indicate complete devastation, severe food insecurity, and increasing displacement.

At a recent UN General Assembly session, Saudi officials called for formal recognition of Palestine, not in mere symbolic terms, but as the foundation for a new, stable regional order.

“Recognizing the Palestinian state is a strategic necessity,” said the Saudi delegation, urging the upcoming conference to deliver more than words.

The high-level meeting, scheduled for June 17–20 at the UN headquarters in New York, is expected to draw broad participation and aims to establish a roadmap for realizing a lasting two-state solution.
