London, 31 August 2021 (TDI): The UN Security Council adopted a resolution for Afghanistan 2593, which explains the Council’s minimum expectations of the Taliban. UK’s Permanent Representative to the UN Barbara Woodward spoke in favor of the resolution. She explained that the UK supports counter-terrorism, humanitarian assistance, and human rights in Afghanistan.
On behalf of the UK Government, Ambassador Barbara laid emphasis on four key points. First, she said, the Taliban should adhere to their commitments and ensure a safe exit for those who wish to leave Afghanistan. Second, the Taliban should prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorist groups. Third, humanitarian organizations should be allowed to work in Afghanistan. Fourth, human rights, especially for the protection of women, children, and minorities, should be protected at all costs.
She concluded by saying that this resolution is a unified international response to the Afghanistan Issue. The Taliban will be held accountable for violating their commitments.
