UK at the Tenth NPT Review Conference

New York, 2 August 2022 (TDI): Graham Stuart, Minister for Europe at Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), affirmed the UK’s efforts toward a world without nuclear weapons at the 10th Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference.

During the conference, Graham Stuart reaffirmed UK’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations under the treaty.

UK National Report 2021

While highlighting the UK’s efforts, the Minister presented the National Report of the UK.

Published in 2021, the report demonstrates that the UK takes its responsibilities seriously as a Nuclear Weapon State. Moreover, it indicates that the country is committed to transparency and accountability.

Overall, the report highlights steps taken by the UK to reduce nuclear weapons since the Treaty’s implementation in 2015.

UK’s efforts toward nuclear arms reduction

Additionally, the Minister highlighted that since Cold War, the UK has dramatically reduced the number of nuclear weapons. “We are the only Nuclear Weapon State to have decreased our deterrent capability to a single delivery system,” Graham Stuart said.

The Minister added, “Indeed, ours is the smallest stockpile of any recognized nuclear state.”

Commitment towards disarmament

Graham Stuart also affirmed UK’s role in disarmament by pioneering verification work, transparency, and advancing risk reduction.

Moreover, the Minister said, “We will carry on pressing for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty to enter into force and for negotiations on a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty in the Conference of Disarmament.”

Meanwhile, the UK also released a joint ministerial statement with the US and France. The statement was on preventing nuclear war and its commitment to honoring national security when given.

Towards the end, the UK confirmed its support for Ukraine against Russian aggression. The UK also showed concern for Iran and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on the continued escalation of their nuclear programmes.

The UK also called upon State Parties to work towards a meaningful outcome across all pillars of the Treaty.
