Tokyo, 28 September 2022 (TDI): In a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio announced that Japan will establish a Toyota vehicle factory in Cambodia.

Alongside the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, Prime Ministers of both countries held bilateral discussions about the cooperation between Japan and Cambodia. The cooperation in the fields of security and the economy were especially highlighted during the discussion.

Discussion of the meeting

Minister Kishida expressed gratitude to Cambodia for allowing Japanese naval ships to visit Sihanoukville and announced plans to build a Toyota facility there. Furthermore, he also requested the Royal Government of Cambodia to keep supporting Japanese investment in Cambodia.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also said that Japan has deeply cherished its cooperation with ASEAN for the ASEAN framework. In addition, the next year will commemorate the 50th anniversary of their friendship and cooperation.

Minister Samdech Hun Sen expressed his gratitude to Japan for helping Cambodia host the ASEAN Chairmanship this year. He used the chance to invite Kishida Fumio to the upcoming ASEAN-Japan Summit and East Asia Summit in Cambodia.

Furthermore, Minister Samdech Hun Sen also praised Kishida Fumio’s speech at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly’s General Debate, which emphasized Japan’s assistance with the peace process in Cambodia and that country’s participation in peacekeeping operations run by the UN.

Both prime ministers discussed the issues of mutual concern, including the conflict in Ukraine, the Korean Peninsula, the Myanmar problem, and the South China Sea issues. Both sides were determined to keep collaborating to overcome these problems.

Cambodia-Japan investments relations 

Cambodia has a GDP per capita of $1,591 in 2021 while the per capita GDP of Japan was $39,285. The Japanese initiative of investment in the automobile sector will prove beneficial for Cambodia’s future. It will create job opportunities in Cambodia and decrease the inflation ratio. Moreover, it will also strengthen the tie between the two countries and open more ways of diplomacy.
