Kampala, 26 Aug 2021 (TDI): Uganda has agreed to a request from the US to take in 2000 Afghan refugees fleeing after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, last week.
On 25 August, Uganda received 51 evacuees from Afghanistan. Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed that evacuees include men, women, and children “who have undergone Covid-19 testing and will go under quarantine.” This is the first of numerous groups that will be temporarily accommodated in Uganda before being moved overseas, according to official sources of government.
This acceptance of evacuees reflects the long-standing Ugandan tradition of welcoming refugees and other communities in need, shared the US Embassy.
