Tripoli, 4 October 2022 (TDI): Foreign Ministers of Turkiye and Libya met to discuss the roadmap for elections and bilateral relations. A delegation of representatives from the Republic of Turkiye paid an official visit to Libya on 3rd October 2022.

The visit was upon the instructions of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of the Republic of Türkiye.

The representatives included were Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu; the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fatih Dönmez; Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Hulusi Akar; Minister of National Defence, and Mehmet Muş; the Minister of Trade.

In addition, Fahrettin Altun, Director of the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications, and Ambassador İbrahim Kalın, Presidential Spokesperson also participated.

The Turkish delegates met with their counterparts and other high officials including the Prime Minister of Libya. Various issues of bilateral relations between the two countries were discussed.

The election and political transition in Libya, bilateral relations, military training, and several regional issues were exchanged between negotiators.

They also talked about conducting elections in Libya as soon as possible and the developments regarding legal infrastructure work.

Joint News Conference of Foreign Ministers

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and his counterpart Najla Mangoush held a joint news conference after conducting the bilateral meeting. The Foreign Minister of Turkiye stated that Libya needed a political solution through the conduction of elections.

The people of Libya own the right to decide the process of elections. He ensured that Turkiye will not hesitate to support Libya.

The Minister further stated that “We will work to evolve the calm on the ground into a lasting peace. All countries on the Mediterranean coasts should fairly benefit from the resources in the region.

Third countries have no right to interfere with agreements signed by the two sovereign states”. The interlocutors also publicized that both agreed to sign an MOU in the hydrocarbon area and the other was due to sign one on gas.

Najla Mangoush, the Foreign minister of Libya expressed her gratitude to Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and his delegation.

She stated that the relationship between the two states is based on mutual interests in which each party gets benefits in the same manner. She also urged the countries of common interest to follow the same course.
