Washington (TDI): As the United States and Iran move closer to indirect negotiations set to take place in Islamabad, officials in Washington are projecting a tone of careful optimism, while acknowledging that the path ahead remains uncertain.

Speaking briefly before departing on Air Force One Friday evening, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence in his negotiating team but stopped short of predicting any specific outcome.

“We’ll see how it turns out. JD, Steve, and Jared are involved. It’s a strong team, and they’re meeting tomorrow. We’ll see where it goes,” he said, referring to the delegation led by Vice President JD Vance and senior advisers.

Trump’s remarks reflected a broader strategy that blends optimism with a degree of unpredictability. He also framed the discussions in strategic and economic terms, particularly referencing regional trade routes.

“The strait will open up,” he said, suggesting that key maritime channels would eventually become accessible. He added that the United States itself does not rely heavily on such routes, noting, “We don’t use the strait, others will step in.”

When asked about contingency plans if diplomacy falters, Trump dismissed the need for one. “It won’t be simple, but we’ll get there,” he said. “You don’t need a backup plan.”

While Trump struck a somewhat unconventional tone, Vice President Vance offered a more traditional diplomatic outlook. He described the upcoming talks as likely to be “positive,” but warned that Washington remains cautious about Tehran’s intentions.

As discussions prepare to begin in Islamabad, the atmosphere remains a mix of guarded hope and lingering mistrust, leaving the final outcome dependent on what happens behind closed doors rather than public statements made in advance.
