Islamabad (TDI): The first Italian-led training course for Pakistani police officers on migration management was held at the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Academy in Islamabad.
The training was conducted as part of a shared commitment to countering illegal migration and migrant trafficking, with instructors drawn from Italy’s Central Directorate of Immigration and Border Police.
The course marks a milestone in bilateral security relations between Rome and Islamabad, bringing together frontline Pakistani officers with Italian counterparts who have extensive experience managing migration flows.

Italy, as a primary entry point for migrants crossing the Mediterranean, has developed considerable expertise in border management, documentation, and anti-trafficking operations, knowledge it is now actively sharing with partner nations.
The initiative was described as an important step in strengthening operational cooperation and the exchange of expertise between Italian and Pakistani law enforcement authorities.
Pakistan is a major country of origin and transit for irregular migrants attempting to reach Europe, often through dangerous overland and sea routes.
Equipping the FIA with best practices could prove consequential in disrupting smuggling networks operating along these corridors.

The training reflects a growing trend among European governments to address migration challenges upstream, investing in the institutional capacity of source and transit countries rather than relying solely on border enforcement at home.
Italy’s engagement in Pakistan fits within a broader diplomatic effort to build partnerships across South Asia and the Middle East.
The Italian Embassy in Islamabad acknowledged the FIA headquarters and the FIA Academy for their cooperation and support in organizing the course. The training was both a diplomatic investment and a practical tool in managing illegal migration.
The initiatve signals that Italy-Pakistan ties, traditionally anchored in trade and the large Pakistani diaspora in Italy, are quietly expanding into the security and law enforcement sphere.
