Oslo (TDI): The Norwegian Nobel Committee has revealed that 287 nominations have been submitted for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, with strong indications that US President Donald Trump could be among the contenders.

According to the committee’s secretary, Kristian Berg Harpviken, the nominations include 208 individuals and 79 organisations. He pointed out that this year’s list shows a noticeable shift, with many fresh names appearing compared to previous years.

Harpviken, who assumed his role in early 2025, said he was struck by how much the list changes from one year to the next. Despite rising global tensions and challenges to international cooperation, he stressed that the importance of the Peace Prize remains undiminished.

While Trump’s name has been widely discussed, there is no official confirmation. Leaders from countries such as Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have publicly claimed they nominated him, but the Nobel Committee does not disclose verified nominees. The entire nomination list is kept confidential for 50 years, and being nominated does not imply endorsement.

The nomination process allows thousands of eligible individuals, including lawmakers, heads of state, academics and past laureates, to propose candidates.

Other names circulating in discussions include Yulia Navalnaya, Pope Leo, and Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms. In addition, US Senator Lisa Murkowski and Greenlandic politician Aaja Chemnitz have reportedly been nominated for their efforts to promote stability and cooperation in the Arctic region.

Harpviken also expressed concern over the health of 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights activist who is currently imprisoned and reportedly in critical condition. He noted that international pressure is mounting for her release so she can receive proper medical care.

The winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize is scheduled to be announced on October 9, with the award ceremony set to take place on December 10 in Oslo.
