Washington (TDI): United States President Donald Trump said the country is engaged in ongoing talks with Cuba and suggested a deal is possible soon, indicating the administration’s immediate focus remains on the escalating confrontation with Iran.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said Washington is in dialogue with Havana but stressed that developments involving Iran would take precedence. “We’re talking to Cuba,” he said, adding that the United States would “do Iran before Cuba,” according to media reports.
Trump suggested a breakthrough can come quickly in the long-strained relationship between the two countries. He said both sides are motivated to reach an agreement but warned that if negotiations failed, the United States would pursue other options.
The comments come amid mounting economic turmoil in Cuba. The island nation has faced severe fuel shortages and widespread electricity outages, worsening an already fragile economy and increasing pressure on its government.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed earlier that talks with the United States are taking place, describing them as an effort to address longstanding disputes between the two countries and move away from confrontation.
Washington has signaled that any potential easing of sanctions would likely depend on significant political and economic reforms from Havana. Cuban officials, however, have stressed that national sovereignty must be respected in any agreement.
The discussions unfold against the backdrop of broader geopolitical tensions, including an intensifying military conflict with Iran. The crisis has become Trump administration’s top foreign policy priority right now, with many suggesting Trump does not have an exit plan.
Relations between Washington and Havana have fluctuated sharply in recent years, with sanctions and political tensions persisting despite periodic attempts at dialogue. Trump’s latest remarks suggest the possibility of a new phase in the relationship, though the outcome of the talks remains uncertain.
