Trump Approval Rating Falls to Lowest Level of Current Term: Poll

Washington (TDI): US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to its lowest point of his current term, as concerns over rising living costs and the ongoing conflict with Iran weigh on public opinion, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos survey.

The poll, conducted over four days and completed on Monday, found that 34 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s performance, down from 36 percent in a previous survey earlier in April. Support has steadily declined since he took office in January 2025, when his approval stood at 47 percent.

Much of the survey was carried out before a recent security incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where a suspect was stopped before reaching the venue where Trump was present. Authorities have since charged the individual with attempting to assassinate the president, though it remains unclear how the episode might influence public sentiment.

Analysts say the decline in approval is closely linked to economic pressures and foreign policy concerns. Only 22 percent of respondents said they approve of Trump’s handling of the cost of living, reflecting growing frustration as inflation and energy prices rise.

Fuel costs, in particular, have surged sharply since the US and Israel launched military action against Iran in late February. Average gasoline prices have climbed by more than 40 percent to around $4.18 per gallon, adding strain on households and becoming a key political issue ahead of upcoming elections.

The poll also highlights challenges for Trump within his own party. While a majority of Republicans, 78 percent, still support him overall, a notable share expressed dissatisfaction with his approach to economic issues.

Among independent voters, who are expected to play a crucial role in the next elections, Democrats currently hold a clear advantage. A significant portion of respondents, however, remain undecided.

Trump, who won the 2024 election after promising to bring down prices, is now facing approval ratings on the economy that are lower than at any point during his previous presidency, and even below the weakest readings of his predecessor, Joe Biden.

On foreign policy, public backing for the US conflict with Iran has also declined. Just 34 percent of Americans expressed support, continuing a downward trend seen in recent months.

Although tensions with Iran have eased somewhat following a ceasefire, disruptions to oil shipments from the Persian Gulf continue to push energy prices higher, adding to economic uncertainty both in the US and globally.

The nationwide poll surveyed 1,269 adults, including over 1,000 registered voters, and has a margin of error of three percentage points.
