Sharm El Sheikh, 8 November 2022 (TDI): The President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, took part and addressed the opening ceremony of the Pavilion of the Republic of Tajikistan at the twenty-seventh session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27).

The President greeted the guests and stated that Tajikistan has been an active participant and takes practicable actions to execute the decisions of the meetings to the convention.

Emomali Rahmon presented the audience with the country’s plan to create a “Special International Fund for the Protection of Glaciers”. Previously, Tajikistan also implemented the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1998 and the Paris Agreement in 2017.

According to the president, Emomali Rahmon, his country contributes very little to global greenhouse gas emissions.

Resultingly, Tajikistan ranks 130th on this list, which places it in a powerful place because of its low emission levels.

More than 98 percent of the electricity in Tajikistan comes from renewable sources, known as “green energy,” mostly hydropower. Tajikistan ranks sixth globally in this metric.

President Rahmon stated that water resources are crucial to stabilizing and adapting to climate change and minimizing its effects.

Given that 60% of Central Asia’s water resources come from the glaciers and water sources in Tajikistan, this approach will make it more difficult for the countries in the region to implement their water use plans.

With this regard, the President proposed that 2025 be proclaimed the “International Year of Glacier Protection” and a specific day be designated as the World Day for the Protection of Glaciers. Rahmon expressed expectations from all the UN members.

He anticipated that they will support their country through their active participation and advancing measures in executing this responsibility. The President concluded his speech by wishing success to the member of the conference.
