Dushanbe (TDI): Tajik authorities said five people were killed during an armed confrontation along the country’s border with Afghanistan, according to state media reports.

Tajikistan’s national media, citing the Border Troops of the Tajik State Committee for National Security, reported that three individuals crossed into Tajik territory late Tuesday in the Shamsiddin Shohin district of the southwestern Khatlon region. The group was located by security forces the following day.

According to the statement, the intruders ignored orders from Tajik border guards to surrender and instead opened fire. Authorities said the group was planning an armed assault on a border post operated by the State Committee for National Security.

“All three attackers were neutralised during the operation,” the statement said, adding that two Tajik border guards were also killed in the exchange.

The incident marks the third armed border violation or alleged terrorist attack originating from Afghanistan within the past month, according to Tajik officials.

The statement accused the Afghan authorities of failing to meet their international obligations to ensure security along the shared border, describing their conduct as irresponsible and inconsistent with previous assurances.

Tajikistan also called on the Afghan administration to issue an apology and take additional concrete measures to improve security along the frontier. Kabul did not immediately respond to the accusations.

Earlier this month, Tajik authorities reported that five people were killed and five others wounded in two separate cross-border incidents involving armed groups from Afghanistan.
