United Nations-Tajikistan Cooperation

Each year, March 2 is celebrated as the day of accession of the Republic of Tajikistan to the United Nations.

In January 1992, UN Security Council adopted a resolution on the admission of the Republic of Tajikistan to the United Nations as an equal member. On March 2, 1992, the Republic of Tajikistan finally became a member of the UN.

The membership of the Republic of Tajikistan in the UN laid a foundation for developing Tajikistan’s cooperation with the institutes, agencies, and specialized organizations of the UN system.

The Republic of Tajikistan also actively cooperates with United Nations in different fields, including peace and stability, security, environmental protection, sustainable development, and water management.

The United Nations also supports the Central Asian Republic in achieving its national priorities. In the early years after becoming a UN Member State, the national priorities were largely focused on conflict resolution, mediation, reconciliation, and reconstruction.

In February 1993, United Nations opened UNMOT (United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan) in Dushanbe. Assistance in peacekeeping efforts, humanitarian assistance, and advancement of the peace process in Tajikistan were some of the main activities of UNMOT.
