Taijikistan’s Foreign Minister meets UN Representatives

Dushanbe, 7 December 2021 (TDI): Today, Foreign Minister of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, was called on by UN Representatives Natalya Gherman and Jehangir Khan. The former is the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Central Asia and Head of UNRCCA.

UNRCCA is the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia. Meanwhile, the latter happens to be the Director of the UN Counter-Terrorism Center. Both delegates are currently on a working visit to Tajikistan and stopped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an exchange with Minister Muhriddin.

THE MEETING

During this diplomatic interaction, both sides expressed a firm interest in increasing Tajikistan’s involvement in, and cooperation with, the UN. They mentioned multiple facets in which to expand cooperation further, for instance, global peace and security, environmental protection, sustainable and social development, as well as eliminating general modern threats. Additionally, the two parties discussed the practical steps both Tajikistan and the UN must take to accelerate collaboration.

Furthermore, both Minister Muhriddin and the UN Representatives raised issues relating to regional security in Tajikistan. They expressed a resolve to strengthen the country’s cooperation with the UN’s counter-terrorism units in this regard. Specifically, they pinpointed the Counter-Terrorism Centre of the UN Office on Counter-Terrorism.

The Minister communicated Tajikistan’s strong condemnation of international terrorist and extremist activities. He also emphasized that the country fully endorses the Joint Plan of Action for the Implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia, in addition to the UN Secretary General’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism.

Muhriddin also extended congratulations to the representatives on the inception of the 4th phase of the Joint Plan. The official ceremony of this event will be in Dushanbe on 8 December 2021. It will be under the framework of the 11th meeting of Deputy Foreign Ministers of Central Asian nations.
