Japan, Brazil discuss Bilateral Cooperation

Tokyo, 7 December 2021 (TDI): HAYASHI Yoshimasa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a telephonic dialogue with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Carlos França.

The two counterparts exchanged views on multiple issues along with agreeing to cooperate for the realization of a free and open international order based on the rule of law. The Japanese Foreign Minister expressed that Japan intends to continue working with Brazil.

Japan considers it as a Strategic Global Partner. The meeting encompassed discussion on shared values, international issues as well as bilateral relations.

Whereas, the Foreign Minister of Brazil on his part appreciated the efforts of Japan for the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)”. From the next year, Brazil will serve as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. In that regard, the two counterparts affirmed continued coordination on international developments.

Japan is the proponent of FOIP which is a platform to manifest an open and free Indo-Pacific region as an international public asset. This will be realized by guaranteeing a rule-based international order by attaching significance to the centrality and unity of ASEAN.

Japan and Brazil will jointly utilize the Japan-US-Brazil Exchange (JUSBE) to collaborate for the development of the Caribbean, Latin America, and the international community.

The JUSBE is a framework that endeavors to boost policy coordination on regional issues. In addition, it will work to fortify democratic governance, advance economic prosperity, and build upon the traditional ties of the member countries, based on shared values.

Economically, Japan and Brazil have a strong relationship and the two intend to further deepen the ties. In addition, the two partners will also develop an open, secure, and transparent 5G telecommunications infrastructure.

Moreover, HAYASHI Yoshimasa and Carlos França also exchanged views on the value of both countries proceeding to manage the discussions on World Trade Organization (WTO) reform. They also reaffirmed that the two countries will advance discussions and collaboration on climate change and other matters.
