Damascus, 24 February 2022 (TDI): The Syrian Presidency announced that Syria recognizes the Republics of Luhansk and Donetsk.

The President of Syria proposed during the visit of a Russian parliamentary delegation that included representatives of the Donetsk Republic.

A proposal that came two months before the recent developments. Syria officially recognizes the Republic of Donetsk with hopes of building relations with it.

Moreover, this position of Syria stems from its conviction that the Ukrainian crisis is a problem created by Western countries. More importantly, the United States, to divide peoples and undermine Russian national security.

One of Syria’s firm principles is that confronting Western policies is a common and permanent interest for all peoples opposed to hegemony. Moreover, Syria assures that it will confront it in all possible ways.

Syria affirms its readiness to work on building and strengthening relations with the Republics of Luhansk and Donetsk. This comes in the context of common interests and mutual respect.

Putin’s take on Ukraine

On the other hand, President Putin declared that Ukraine is not just a neighboring country for Russia. Rather, it is an inalienable part of Russia’s history, culture and spiritual space. He also continued by saying:

“These are our comrades, those dearest to us – not only colleagues, friends, but also relatives, people bound by blood, by family ties”

Nonetheless, President Putin said that Maidan did not bring Ukraine any closer to democracy and progress. He stressed that having accomplished a coup d’état, the nationalists and those political forces that supported them eventually led Ukraine into an impasse pushing the country into the abyss of civil war.

What countries recognize Donetsk and Luhansk Republics?

So far, only Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Syria have joined Putin in recognising Donetsk and Luhansk – along with breakaway Georgian provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. They all did so also on Monday.
