Stockholm, 7 October 2023 (TDI): Sweden Defence Minister, Pal Johnson, announced a significant assistance package for Ukraine, worth 2.2 billion crowns ($199 million) during a press conference on October 6, 2023.

This aid package included ammunition and spare parts for the previously provided system. During the press conference, Minister Johnson revealed that the Swedish government has tasked its armed forces to assess Sweden’s capability.

The aim is to supply JAS Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine. Additionally, Sweden will also provide communication equipment and training to Ukrainian forces.

This marks the 14th assistance package donated to Ukraine by Sweden since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The cumulative aid from the Nordic nations to Ukraine now amounts to 22 billion crowns.

Johnson emphasized that, due to serious domestic security challenges Sweden faces, it is necessary for the country to seek membership in the NATO alliance. Becoming a part of NATO would enable Sweden to donate fighter jets.

However, Swedish NATO membership is currently pending ratification by the parliaments of Turkey and Hungary which caused a delay in its membership.

Furthermore, Minister Johnson stressed the need to establish support mechanisms that are long-term and sustainable. He highlighted the importance of increased international support for Ukraine.

In a recent official meeting of European leaders in Granada, Spain, Ukrainian President Zalensky warned that if Europe were to withdraw its support for Ukraine, it could lead to Russia’s aggression against other countries within the next five years.

President Zelenskyy also expressed confidence in the support of both America and Europe to Ukraine.
