Suriname, Mexico to strengthen bilateral ties

Paramaribo, 20 October 2022 (TDI): President of Suriname Chandrikapersad Santokhi received Letters of Credence from Víctor Hugo Morales, Ambassador of Mexico. Victor Hugo Morales has been appointed as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Mexico to Suriname.

The copies of the Letter of Credence were also presented to Albert Ramdin, Foreign Minister of Suriname. Both officials discussed ways to strengthen cordial relationships between their states.

They highlighted the importance of bilateral ties and coordinated efforts between Suriname and Mexico for developing the respective countries and the region.

Suriname-Mexico Relations

Mexico and Suriname are two important American nations with a colonial history. Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821.

Suriname gained complete independence in 1975 from the Netherlands, the only state in the American region to be colonized by the Dutch. Soon after gaining independence, the diplomatic relations between Mexico and Suriname were established in 1975.

Both states have signed several bilateral agreements since then, including trade treaties. A bilateral Agreement on Science and Technical cooperation was signed in 2012. In the same year, an understanding of the agriculture field’s cooperation was also signed.

In addition, Suriname diplomates had to be taught the Spanish language, under which scholarship by the government of Mexico was provided yearly to the students in Suriname. This scholarship covered the Spanish language course and a study tour to complete a master’s degree in Mexico.

The two states signed a trade agreement in 2017 amounting to US $8.1 million. Both countries are a part of regional and international organizational structures. They are members of the United Nations, Association of Caribbean States, Community of Latin American and the Caribbean States, and Organization of American States.

Since establishing their diplomatic relations, both states have been coordinating in the trade and educational field to boost bilateral ties. At the moment of presenting the Letter of Credence, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing their cooperation and working for the security and peace of the region.
