Islamabad, 20 October 2022 (TDI): World Statistics Day is observed every five years on October 20 to highlight the significance of statistics in academic research and the day-to-day development of society.

United Nations Statistical Commission designated World Statistics Day in 2010 to acknowledge the significance of statistics in our daily lives.

Theme of 2022

The theme for this year’s World Statistics Day is “Data for Sustainable Development”. The idea is to promote the use of statistics and data in decision-making including high-quality statistical systems in an effective way.

Significance of Statistics

Statistics play a significant role in various fields like healthcare, law, finance, science, & education. Statistics help us raise awareness, frame important questions, and work towards getting the answers to those questions to reveal important information in the language of numbers.

Moreover, statistics also play an important role in tracing the progress toward sustainable development goals. Statistics and good data are essential for effective planning, monitoring, and evaluation of progress toward the SDGs.

Statistical knowledge helps in using proper methods to collect the data, employ the correct analyses, and effectively present the results.

On this day, the world celebrates the progress that has been made in using statistics to improve our world. On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to continue working together to use statistics for a better future.

History of World Statistics Day

At the 41st session of the United Nations General Assembly in February 2010, United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) put the proposal to observe World Statistics Day.

According to United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) the production of reliable, timely statistics and indicators of countries’ progress is significant for informed policy decisions and monitoring the implementation of the millennium development goals.
