Seoul, 30 November 2021 (TDI): The government of South Korea released a statement regarding the resumption of the negotiations over the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The official statement was released via the official website of the South Korean Foreign Ministry.

According to the statement, the government of South Korea will support the recommencement of the JCPOA talks that took place in Vienna on 29th November. The Korean government encouraged the stakeholders to engage diplomatically. Moreover, it anticipates worthwhile progress.

South Korea is optimistic that the stakeholders will reach a consensus with regards to JCPOA as well as faithfully comply with it. Such compliance will contribute towards the restoration of regional peace and stability. Furthermore, it will reinforce the global non-proliferation regime.

Apart from the above, the Korean government endeavors, to increase the diplomatic efforts to revive JCPOA with regards to the frozen Iranian assets. This will be done by taking into account the significance of South Korea’s alliance with the United States (US) as well as the bilateral relationship with Iran.

Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA is also known as Iran’s nuclear deal. It is a detailed document of 159 pages and five annexes. The JCPOA agreement was reached by the P5+1 and Iran, in 2015. P5+1 are China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The purpose of the deal was to ensure nuclear non-proliferation.

Later the agreement was endorsed by the 2231 resolution of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The resolution was adopted in July 2015. As per the nuclear-related postulates of the JCPOA, Iran will comply with the verification procedures of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

However, the US withdrew from JCPOA under the leadership of Donald Trump, the then US President, in 2018, jeopardizing the agreement. Ever since, the responsible states are urging both parties to revive the agreement for the sake of world peace. Nevertheless, so far, a consensus hasn’t been reached.
