Islamabad (TDI): The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Pakistan celebrated the 78th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence at the Official Residence of the High Commissioner.
The event was led by High Commissioner Fred Senevirathne and attended by mission staff, members of the Sri Lankan community holding senior positions in leading companies and international organizations, students from local universities, and military officers undergoing government-sponsored training programs.
The ceremony began with the hoisting of the Sri Lankan national flag by the High Commissioner, followed by the singing of the national anthem. A two-minute silence was observed in solemn remembrance of the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the freedom, sovereignty, and unity of the nation.

Religious leaders representing major faiths offered prayers and blessings for the country and its people, reflecting Sri Lanka’s longstanding tradition of harmony and coexistence.

Messages from the President, Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism of Sri Lanka were read, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to unity, reconciliation, sustainable development, and national progress.
In his address, High Commissioner Senevirathne highlighted the shared responsibility of Sri Lankans, both at home and abroad, in nation-building.
He reflected on the strong and enduring friendship between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, recalling key milestones and moments of mutual support that have strengthened bilateral ties over the years.

The High Commissioner encouraged the Sri Lankan community to actively contribute to deepening cooperation and people-to-people relations between the two nations.
The event concluded with a reception hosted by the High Commission, offering attendees an opportunity for fellowship and reflection on Sri Lanka’s journey as an independent nation.
