Islamabad, 10 November 2022 (TDI): The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, Hina Rabbani Khar met with Iran’s Special Envoy to Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi Ghom on Thursday in Islamabad.

During the meeting, Khar stressed the sustained engagement of the international community with the interim Afghan government to ensure the well-being and prosperity of the Afghan people.

She further enunciated that both countries share a deep-rooted bond while assuring Pakistan’s commitment to supporting a peaceful and stable Afghanistan.

The role of the two neighboring countries is very crucial in securing a peaceful Afghanistan, as both countries are neighbors of Afghanistan, the State Minister stressed.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Iranian Special Representative also met his Pakistani counterpart, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq.

Both officials discussed the prospects of strengthening the cooperation towards advancing the mutually reinforcing goals of regional peace and development.

Who is Hassan Kazemi Ghom?

Hassan Kazemi Ghom is the Special Representative of Iran to Afghanistan under the Taliban regime. He was also the Ambassador of Iran to Iraq.

On 17 October 2021, President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi appointed Kazemi Ghom as the Special Envoy to Afghanistan.

Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan tripartite ties

The three countries share deep-rooted ties based on religious, linguistic, cultural linkages, and spiritual affiliation. Iran and Pakistan host the largest Afghan refugee populations in the world.

Pakistan and Iran’s roles in Afghanistan have become central to preventing another civil war among different ethnic and ideological factions in the wake of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.

Both Pakistan and Iran are focused on the formation of a stable government in Afghanistan that can bring stability to the whole region.

It is noteworthy that Pakistan and Iran along with China, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan have established a platform for handling the emerging situation in Afghanistan. Pakistan and Iran strongly share views on regional security connected to Afghanistan.
