South Korean Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Yoon

Seoul (TDI): A South Korean court issued an arrest warrant on Tuesday for President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was recently impeached, according to Yonhap News Agency.

The Seoul Western District Court approved the warrant for Yoon on charges of orchestrating the failed martial law declaration on December 3, leading an insurrection, and abusing his power, the report stated, citing unnamed sources.

This marks the first instance in South Korea’s history where a sitting president faces such legal action.

On Monday, a joint investigative team, including the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), police, and the Defense Ministry’s investigative unit, announced it had sought the warrant based on allegations of insurrection and power abuse.

Yoon has denied the accusations, describing the martial law declaration as a legitimate “act of governance” intended to warn the opposition party against what he claimed was an overreach of legislative authority.

In response, Yoon’s legal team submitted a written statement to the Seoul Western District Court, arguing that the CIO lacks the legal jurisdiction to investigate him for treason-related charges.
