PM Shehbaz Hails Strong Islamabad-Washington Ties on US 250th Anniversary

Islamabad (TDI): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong and longstanding relationship with the United States, saying the two countries cooperate closely across multiple areas including counterterrorism, trade, and investment.

Speaking at an event held in Islamabad to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, the prime minister extended congratulations to US President Donald Trump, the US government, and the American people on behalf of Pakistan.

He noted that Pakistan–US relations span more than eight decades and recalled that the United States was among the first countries to recognize Pakistan after independence. He also highlighted cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, education, and economic development, pointing out that many Pakistani students have studied in the US and that a large Pakistani diaspora lives there.

PM Shehbaz said the two countries continue to maintain strong collaboration, particularly in counterterrorism efforts as well as trade and investment. He emphasized the importance of further strengthening the partnership.

The prime minister also praised President Trump, describing him as someone who has contributed to peace efforts, and said he had played a role in helping reduce tensions between Pakistan and India last year. He added that Pakistan is currently acting as a facilitator in efforts to maintain communication between the United States and Iran.

During the same event, US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker described the evolution of US–Pakistan relations as significant, saying the partnership has developed into a more strategic and cooperative relationship in recent years.

She credited US leadership for strengthening ties and said direct engagement between the two countries’ leadership had helped deepen mutual trust. She also highlighted Pakistan’s role as a venue for high-level diplomatic discussions between the US and Iran, describing it as an important example of Pakistan’s diplomatic positioning.

Baker further praised cultural and people-to-people links between the two countries, mentioning events in Pakistan such as the revival of Lahore’s Basant festival and visits to communities in Sindh. She also noted Pakistan’s role in producing footballs for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, calling it an example of sports-based connection between nations.

She concluded by expressing optimism about the future of US–Pakistan relations, saying the partnership still has significant potential for growth.
