New York, 3 August 2022 (TDI): Abdulaziz bin Mohamed Al-Wasil presented his credentials to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on 2 August 2022 in New York. He presented his credentials as a Permanent representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations in New York.

During the meeting, Al-Wasil extended the kingdom’s greetings to the UN Secretary-General and also wished him success in his tenure.

Agenda of the Meeting

Al-Wasil, who has been serving as Ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations since 2016 met with Guterres in New York.

The two leaders discussed areas of cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the UN. They also discussed ways to enhance the existing bonds as well as the cooperation between them.

Guterres and Al-Wasil also discussed areas of mutual interest and close cooperation and partnership.

Saudi Arabia and the UN

Saudi Arabia became a member of the United Nations on 26 June 1945. This was after Amir Faisal ibn Abdul Aziz became a signatory of the Charter as a founding member in San Francisco.

The country has since contributed positively to the UN. There are also 22 UN agencies, Funds, and Programmes operating in Saudi Arabia. The UN-Saudi Arabian partnership operates under a five-year agreement.

So far, the UN and Saudi Arabia have achieved some significant goals. These include;

Effectively providing social services and education to enhance the standard of life. The UN and Saudi Arabia have also ensured that knowledge-based equitable and sustainable economic development with innovation and modern infrastructure is available.

They have also worked towards establishing an equitable, accountable, effective, and efficient public sector. The UN and Saudi Arabia have also achieved sustainable urban development linking towns and other human settlements thus enhancing lasting solutions for all.

They also have proper management and preservation of natural and cultural resources. The UN also spreads awareness of sustainable development by promoting the knowledge of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs in the Saudi community.
