Rwanda Commemorates Kwibuka 31 in Islamabad

Islamabad (TDI): The High Commission of the Republic of Rwanda in Pakistan held a solemn reception to observe the 31st anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi, commemorated annually as Kwibuka, which means “to remember” in Kinyarwanda.

Hosted by High Commissioner Harerimana Fatou, the ceremony took place at Serena Hotel, Islamabad, bringing together members of the diplomatic corps, Pakistani government officials, civil society, academia, and the Rwandan community in Pakistan to honor the memory of the over one million victims of the 1994 genocide.

The commemoration began with a candle-lighting ceremony led by High Commissioner Fatou and Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Secretary (Africa) at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who attended the event as the chief guest.

In her address, High Commissioner Fatou reflected on the significance of Kwibuka as a moment of remembrance, reflection, and renewed commitment to peace. “Kwibuka is not just about mourning the lives lost. It is also a call to uphold the values of unity, dignity, and justice,” she said.

This year’s event also featured survivor testimonies, remarks from international representatives, and discussions highlighting Rwanda’s progress in reconciliation, national healing, and global cooperation against genocide denial.

Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Secretary (Africa) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, attended as the chief guest. In his address, he expressed Pakistan’s solidarity with the people of Rwanda and commended the country’s efforts in reconciliation, peacebuilding, and national unity. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace, justice, and mutual respect among nations.

Diplomats from various countries joined the event to express support for Rwanda’s continued efforts to build a society rooted in resilience, peace, and inclusivity.

The commemoration paid tribute to Rwanda’s journey over the past three decades. Since 1994, the country has emerged as a model of post-conflict recovery, with national initiatives such as the Gacaca community courts and the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission playing a vital role in rebuilding trust and social cohesion.

President Paul Kagame and the Rwandan leadership continue to lead efforts to prevent future atrocities and promote dialogue through international cooperation. Addressing the ceremony, participants recognized Rwanda’s enduring message of hope and the importance of confronting hate with unity.

The 31st anniversary, known as Kwibuka 31, also marks the start of Rwanda’s national 100-day mourning period. This annual observance aims to support survivors and educate the global community about the consequences of indifference and the responsibility to prevent genocide.

The commemoration included messages from international partners and survivor accounts, drawing attention to Rwanda’s journey since 1994.

With a national 100-day mourning period beginning on April 7 each year, Rwanda uses this time to promote healing and ensure that the memories of the victims are preserved.

The High Commission called on the international community and media in Pakistan to amplify the message of Kwibuka and continue supporting efforts that promote peace, inclusion, and remembrance.
