Cairo, 25 July 2022 (TDI): Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov arrived in Cairo on an official visit and was received by the Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Russia’s Foreign Minister and the President of Egypt held a meeting. Accordingly, they discussed bilateral relations and ways to enhance cooperation between Moscow and Cairo.

In addition to this, a personal message from the Russian President was sent to the President of Egypt.

Meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister

Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry also received Foreign Minister Lavrov. Both sides held talks in the presence of the delegations of the two countries.

Subsequently, consultations between the two Foreign Ministers included addressing all issues of bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Russia. Along with an exchange of views on a number of regional and international issues.

Both sides, therefore, held a joint news conference and elaborated on the issues discussed during the official talks.

Foreign Minister Lavrov pointed out that they discussed Russia’s “military operation” in Ukraine with Egyptian officials. In line with this, he said that the officials urged for “a political and diplomatic” settlement to the conflict.

Lavrov further highlighted the issue of Egypt obtaining the status of a dialogue partner regarding the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

“We welcome the interest of our Egyptian friends in obtaining the status of a dialogue partner in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. It is expected that a decision in this regard will be taken at the new summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization next September, and we welcome Egypt’s participation in the “BRICS +” work,” stated Lavrov.

Meeting with Secretary-General of the League of Arab States

Russia’s Foreign Minister also met with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

During the course of Lavrov’s conversation with Secretary General Gheit, both sides gave a high assessment of the level of interaction between the Arab League and Russia.

Specifically in the interests of settling crises within the Middle East and North Africa. Together with strengthening security and stability in the region.

All in all, Foreign Minister Lavrov likewise made a statement at the meeting with the Permanent Representatives of the member countries of the Arab League.
