London, 10 September 2022 (TDI): The Ambassador of Russia to the United Kingdom, Andrei Kelin congratulated the New King Charles II on the accession to the throne.

Charles Philip Arthur was formally proclaimed as the new King of the British Kingdom at the Accession Council, held at St James’s Palace on Friday 10 September. He acceded to the throne after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on 8 September 2022.

Ambassador Andrei Kelin sent a congratulatory letter to the King on this occasion. Moreover, he wished King Charles III a long and illustrious reign and prosperity for his people.

Earlier, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin also expressed his condolences to King Charles III and the Royal family on Queen Elizabeth’s death.

Russia – United Kingdom Relations

Early in the 19th century, Russia and Britain formed an alliance against Napoleon. In the Crimean War of the 1850s, they were opponents. In the struggle for central Asian dominance in the second half of the 19th century, they were enemies again.

They also allied during World Wars I and II, despite tensions caused by the 1917 Russian Revolution. During the Cold War, the two nations were at odds with one another (1947–1989).

After the USSR’s disposal in 1991, Russian corporations established close relationships with London’s financial institutions.

Russia and the UK also established Intergovernmental Steering Committee on Trade and Investment for bolstering their trade relations. In total, 9 sessions of the committee have had held so far.

However, In 2022, the relationship between both countries deteriorated. The United Kingdom imposed economic sanctions on Russian entities due to the Russian-Ukraine conflict.

In February 2022, Britain and its partners blocked banks’ access of Russia to the SWIFT international payment system, according to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
