Washington DC, 10 February 2023 (TDI): The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani held an official meeting with the United States (US) Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley in Washington.


During the meeting, they discussed methods to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the United States and Qatar in multiple domains. They discuss the latest developments in nuclear agreements and matters of mutual interest.

Diplomatic relations between Qatar, Iran and US 

Relations between Qatar, Iran, and the US are complicated and dynamic. Qatar and Iran have had strained relations due to their differing regional politics and support for opposing sides in the Syrian conflict.

Qatar has recently sought to improve its relations with Iran. The country also maintains close ties with the US and its Gulf Arab neighbors.

Qatar is a key regional partner and hosts a significant US military presence, despite US-Iran tensions. The US values Qatar’s support for US counterterrorism and Middle East stability.

Who is Robert Malley?

Robert Malley has been the US Special Envoy for Iran since former US President Barack Obama’s administration. He has served as the White House Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Gulf Region.

Malley has extensive experience in Middle East policy and is well-respected for it. Additionally, he is US Special Envoy for Iran leading US-Iran diplomacy.

This position coordinates and implements US-Iran procedures. It collaborates with other US government agencies, international organizations, and stakeholders to advance US regional interests.

The Envoy strives to promote stability, security, and peace in the region and acts as a critical communication channel. The diplomat fosters economic and commercial relationships and supports American citizens in Iran.
