Qatar to Restore Uzbekistan’s Bibi-Khanym Mosque

-

Tashkent (TDI): Uzbekistan’s Assistant to the President Saida Mirziyoyeva and Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar have signed bilateral cooperation agreements aimed at restoring the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The agreements, established between the Foundation for the Development of Culture and Arts of Uzbekistan, the Aga Khan Trust, and the Qatar Development Foundation, will facilitate not only financial support but also the exchange of expertise in cultural monument restoration.

The historic Bibi-Khanym Mosque, built in the 15th century by Timur (Tamerlane) following his campaign in India, is set to receive significant revitalization efforts.

While specific funding details remain undisclosed, the restoration aims to return the mosque to its original splendor, preserving its architectural uniqueness for future generations.

Originally constructed with materials transported by 95 elephants, the mosque features a striking cobalt blue tympanum and a spacious courtyard adorned with a marble Quran carving.

It is named after Timur’s Chinese wife, and local legends tell of the architect who, enamored with her, leaped from the minaret and soared to Mecca.

At its height, the mosque could accommodate 10,000 worshippers, symbolizing Timur’s legacy.

However, its massive scale led to early deterioration, prompting various restoration efforts, particularly during the Soviet era.

The planned restoration will further enhance this landmark’s historical significance and cultural heritage.
