Qatar and Türkiye enjoy long-standing bilateral relations. In 1973, diplomatic recognition occurred between the two states. Türkiye opened its first embassy in Doha in 1980, while Qatar opened its first embassy in Ankara in 1992.
In 1985, both states signed several bilateral agreements, which later became the framework for their partnership. These agreements were signed in trade, economic and technical fields.
In addition, they also strengthened their ties in cultural spheres. In 2007, Qatar opened its first consulate in Istanbul; in 2009, Qatar opened its first military attaché.
The period between 2008 from 2011 witnessed a qualitative leap in the bilateral relations between the two countries.
Several formal mutual visits at the highest levels took place during these years. These visits contributed to strengthening bonds of cooperation and friendship and resulted in several agreements in different fields.
The period since 2011 experienced harmony in the foreign policy of both countries. It resulted from conformity in foreign policy-based attitudes and vision vis-à-vis the regional events.
Mutual Visits
The mutual high-level visits intensified in 2013. Between 2013 and 2015, the Emir of Qatar visited Istanbul eight times since taking office in 2013. The President of Türkiye visited Doha four times during that period.
In December 2015, Erdoğan also visited Doha when the state was hosting the first session of the High Joint Strategic Committee and signed 15 agreements with Qatar during the visit.
Earlier this year, the Foreign Minister of Türkiye, Mevlut Cauvsoglu, also participated in Doha Forum 2022.
