Moscow, 10 August 2021 (TDI): Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in the high-level UNSC debate chaired by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.
The virtual debate on ‘Enhancing Maritime Security – A Case for International Cooperation’ was also attended by Antony Blinken, Secretary State of USA. In his address, Putin underscored the need of establishing a special framework under the UN to address maritime disputes and crimes. He stated that maritime crimes are exacerbated by the inability of states to fight transnational extremists, pirates. He affirmed that Russia respects the sovereignty of nations and stands firm on the principle of non-intervention. With that, the President asserted that Russia’s conduct in the international community complies with International law. He wished India good luck in the presidency of the UNSC.
India assumed the charge of rotating the presidency for the month of August on 1 August 2021. The incumbent President of the UNSC is T S Tirumurti, the permanent representative of India to the UN. India took the charge intending to focus on areas of maritime security, counter-terrorism, and peace talks.
