Beijing (TDI): China’s newest high-speed marvel, the CR450, officially entered the trial phase this week on the Shanghai–Chongqing–Chengdu high-speed rail corridor. Described as the world’s fastest electric multiple unit (EMU), the train marks another milestone in the country’s cutting-edge railway technology program.
The prototype, which was unveiled late last year, has since undergone intensive performance testing. Having already achieved a maximum speed of 450 kilometers per hour, the CR450 must now complete 600,000 kilometers of safe operation before it can begin carrying passengers.
Engineers attribute the CR450’s record-breaking speed to a combination of aerodynamic refinements and structural advancements. The train’s nose cone has been elongated from 12.5 meters on existing 350 km/h models to 15 meters, substantially cutting air resistance.
Further design adjustments, including fully enclosed bogies and lowered side skirts that hide the wheels, have trimmed overall drag by 22 percent. The train’s height has been reduced by 20 centimeters and its weight lowered by 50 tonnes, resulting in smoother, faster acceleration.

These refinements are the product of five years of meticulous development, where engineers pursued even the smallest drag reductions, sometimes by as little as 0.1 percent. The payoff is impressive: the CR450 can accelerate from a full stop to 350 km/h in just 4 minutes and 40 seconds, roughly 100 seconds faster than the current Fuxing EMUs.
China’s transport infrastructure continues to expand at an unprecedented pace. The nation now operates the world’s largest high-speed rail and expressway systems, forming part of an integrated transport network spanning more than 6 million kilometers.

Launched in 2021, the CR450 program is a flagship project within China’s high-speed rail ambitions. During recent trials, the train set new world benchmarks, recording a top speed of 453 km/h and a combined passing speed of 896 km/h when two trains met head-on, achievements that reaffirm China’s global leadership in advanced rail technology.
As the CR450 moves closer to full commercial service, it symbolizes China’s broader push toward faster, greener, and more efficient transportation, shaping the future of rail travel both domestically and internationally.
