New York, 20 September 2022 (TDI): President of Turkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on Tuesday.

The 77th Session of UNGA is being held at UN Headquarters in New York.

Address by the Turkish President

President Tayyip Erdogan started his address with greetings to all the delegates at the session and UNGA 77 President. He said, “I would like to congratulate Mr. Csaba KÖRÖSİ, who assumed the duty of President of the General Assembly.”

Further, he added, “I find the theme,’ A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges’, set for our General Assembly meeting, very fitting, as we are holding our meeting at a critical time when our world is trying to deal with multiple threats simultaneously.”

Additionally, he highlighted the climate change issue and the role of Turkiye in reducing it. He stated, “By hosting the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, we will continue to play a pioneering role also in this field.”

Russia-Ukraine crisis

President Tayyip Erdogan emphasized Turkiye’s role in the Russia-Ukraine crisis. He said, “We brought the Parties together, first at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, and then in Istanbul.

As a result of the intensive efforts we carried out together with the Secretary-General, we made sure that the Ukrainian grain was able to reach the world through the Black Sea.”

Further, the Turkish President highlighted about Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant issue and said this concerns the security of the entire humanity.

In addition to that, he said, “We will continue to increase our efforts to end the war, which has been reignited in recent days, based on the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.

I hereby call upon international organizations and all countries to provide genuine support to Türkiye’s efforts towards establishing lasting peace.”

While mentioning the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean issues, he said “As Turkiye, we want all the issues in the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean to be solved within the framework of good neighborly relations and in conformity with International Law.”

Moreover, the President also highlighted issues of Libya, the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict, and Afghanistan situation, and the Rohingya Muslim crisis.

He emphasized Turkiye’s ties with the European Union as well as stressed increasing cooperation with the Latin American Region.

President of Turkiye concluded his address by saying, “With these views, I wish that the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly be productive so that it achieves the success which will fulfill the hopes and expectations of humanity.

I once again would like to salute you all with appreciation and respect on behalf of my nation. May you all remain in good health.”
