Cyprus (TDI): Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has raised fresh concerns about whether the United States would stand firmly with its NATO allies if Russia were to launch an attack, calling it the most pressing question facing Europe today.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Tusk said countries along NATO’s eastern flank are increasingly uneasy about the alliance’s readiness, both politically and logistically, to respond quickly in the event of aggression from Moscow.
He warned that the threat from Russia cannot be dismissed as a distant possibility. Instead, he described it as a near-term concern, stressing that the timeline could be measured in months rather than years. For Poland and its neighbors, he said, it is crucial to be confident that all NATO members would fully honor their commitments.
Tusk’s remarks come at a time of growing uncertainty in Europe over US policy under President Donald Trump, whose stance toward allies has often been seen as unpredictable. This has led to renewed calls within Europe to strengthen its own defense capabilities.
Speaking on the sidelines of an informal European Union summit in Cyprus, Tusk argued that the EU needs to evolve into a more effective security alliance. In his view, this means going beyond declarations and building real military capacity, including better coordination and the ability to move forces quickly across borders.

He also pointed to the EU’s mutual defense clause, suggesting it deserves closer attention as Europe rethinks its security framework. With political dynamics shifting, particularly after Hungary’s leadership changes, Tusk indicated there may be an opportunity to push for deeper cooperation.

At the core of his message was a call for greater unity. He emphasized the need for a shared European approach to defense and stronger efforts to secure the continent’s eastern borders, describing this as both his priority and his mission.
