Lima, 21 November 2021, (TDI): The Republic of Peru put forward its candidacy for being re-elected as a member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council on Thursday. The proceeding took place during a ceremony held at Torre Tagle Palace, Lima.Â
Peru launched this candidacy for the next two years, in category C, as part of its unwavering and resolute commitment to the IMO’s principles and objectives. The event was hosted by Peru’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oscar Maurtua.
Several ambassadors, diplomats, and members of Peru’s civil and military authorities attended the event. Admiral Alberto Alcala, General Commander of the Peruvian Navy was also present on the occasion. Â

While speaking at the event, Oscar Maurtua explained Peru’s continuous commitment to the values and principles of the International Maritime Organization. He reiterated the state’s vibrant participation in the various committees and projects of IMO.
In addition, the foreign minister demonstrated how Peru will ensure the protection of marine life, the safety of the sea, and the facilitation of transportation.Â
Moreover, the official video of Peru’s candidacy to IMO was displayed at the event. It was aimed at gaining support from the international actors on Peru’s re-election to the Council. Â
The membership elections of IMO’s Council are scheduled for the next month in London, United Kingdom. Peru has been a Council member since 2013 and aspires to maintain its status at the organization.Â

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is an agency of the United Nations responsible to regulate shipping. It was founded in 1948 with the objective of providing security for marine life, ensuring transport security, and maintaining conservation of the seas and oceans.Â
The organization aims to prevent the atmospheric and marine pollution primarily caused by the ships. Additionally, it makes sure all countries abide by the international rules to maintain maritime security and safety.
